The Contemporary’s mission is to inspire the creative genius in us all by nurturing artists through innovative contemporary art. The Contemporary rose from the need to provide a platform for the work and ideas of contemporary artists. In the years since its inception, its programs have grown, activating positive change in the art community and community-at- large. Today, the Contemporary continues as an incubator for contemporary art, hosting more than 12 exhibitions annually within its 4 onsite galleries and multiple offsite locations within the community.
The MOSAIC Student Artist Program is a free, year-round program for high school students interested in developing their professional artistic skills in the arts, from studio work to administrative knowledge. At thirteen, Fátima Madero arrived in San Antonio with her family, carrying larger than life dreams and speaking very little English. What she found at the Contemporary’s MOSAIC Student Artist Program would transform not just her art, but her sense of belonging. “My artistic journey is a reflection of my diverse and unique identity,” she shares. “I navigated a new culture, adapted to a new school system, and faced the effects of a worldwide pandemic while grappling with the strenuous process of becoming an American citizen for years. As a result, the art I create draws inspiration from the intricacies of my dual-cultural heritage, the challenges of immigrant life, and the nuanced perspectives I’ve developed growing up.” Through MOSAIC, Fátima discovered that her unique perspective wasn’t a limitation but her greatest strength. Today, Fátima stands proud in her identity: “After continuous reflection, I pride myself in loving two cultures, speaking two languages, and representing two flags because where I come from will always be in my heart, but where I go is up to me.”
Fátima’s transformation reflects why arts education is so urgent today. In an increasingly divisive world, programs like MOSAIC introduce students to art that presents global perspectives and encourages understanding and empathy. Art becomes a source of healing for young artists, providing tools to explore complex experiences and find their voice. Helping students like Fátima realize that their complexities aren’t obstacles to overcome but gifts to share with the world- this is the power of art. This is why the Contemporary at Blue Star believes in providing free, accessible arts education to every student ready to discover their creative genius.
