The Arc of San Antonio’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and those who care for them. Their vision is a community where all people with IDD and those who care for them have the supports and services they need to reach their maximum potential.
The ALE program empowers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to live with greater independence, confidence, and dignity. Through daily activities that balance recreation, skill-building, and community volunteering, participants gain valuable experiences that enrich their lives and strengthen their connections to others. Whether lending a hand at local nonprofits or helping with service projects, adults like Shaun learn they have much to give back while developing skills that help them thrive.
Shaun arrived at The Arc of San Antonio in 2016. His mom, Toni, 83, quickly found what she calls “his place” in the Adult Life Enrichment (ALE) program. Shaun especially values the first aid education program led by ALE Director Mary Young, R.N., B.S.N. He put that training into action last summer when Toni collapsed from a minor heatstroke while gardening. Shaun quickly cooled her with a washcloth, called 911, opened the garage for EMTs, secured the house, and calmly accompanied his mom to the hospital, where she made a full recovery. The EMTs later remarked they never would have guessed Shaun had an intellectual disability.
Reflecting on his journey, Shaun said, “The Arc is wonderful. It’s such a special place. I’ve never felt more comfortable since I’ve been here.” His story shows how ALE equips adults with IDD not only to enjoy their days but also to handle life’s unexpected challenges with confidence.
