Child Advocates San Antonio

The mission of Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) is to recruit, develop, and lead highly impactful court appointed volunteer Advocates who provide constancy and support for children and youth who have experienced abuse and neglect. Their vision is to be a leading positive and influential force in the child welfare community, while serving children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Bexar County.

At just 2-years old, Mateo was alone on a balcony, wearing only a diaper and crying in the cold. After two hours, the police arrived, taking him to safety. Mateo was then placed with his grandmother in a familiar apartment with all his toys.

During the day, Mateo attended daycare; when behavioral incidents occurred, his CASA Advocate, Tanya, would be sure he was referred to and received the services he needed to deal with the separation from his parents. When he needed a change in services, Tanya advocated for play therapy. Mateo responded well, engaging with his friends and enjoying daycare.

Mateo now lives with his dad and enjoys visits with his mother. While his dad can provide the stability and safety he needs, Mateo’s mom can enjoy visits and time with her son, keeping their special bond intact. Mateo’s dad still contacts Tanya, asking for advice and recommendations in order to keep his home safe and his parenting on track. He knows Tanya is there for him and for Mateo. Tanya enjoyed advocating for Mateo.

As her first case, Mateo was very special to her. Watching him grow was a gift. He started off struggling and, with care and encouragement, went from tantrums to talking – thriving!
